Cars were very much a special part of my earliest memories. One of my brothers drove/raced a super-quick Chevy 409, the other built a Baja Bug to take on the desert and one brother ran around in a pre-war sedan. So around our house someone was constantly repairing or replacing something in the garage and guess who held the flashlight!

I was the youngest of three brothers, but I learned a whole lot about cars growing up. And my interest in cars has never waned. Naturally, when the opportunity to make a career of automotive journalist was first presented, I jumped at the chance.

My journalism career began in daily newspapers, but quickly moved into monthly magazines. I got hooked on writing long-winded feature stories and shooting images and seeing these published on big glossy pages. One of my first racing experiences with magazines was covering the Baja 500 from inside a race car, the entire race from start to finish. It was at the grueling Baja 500 and I was given the opportunity to navigate for Off-Road Hall of Fame inductee, Manny Esquerra, in his SCORE Class 7S Ford Ranger. Nine hours flat out through Mexico and back...

Manny won the Baja 500 that year, and I went along for the ride and got a once in a lifetime story. What a journey.

Naturally, my racing experience didn't stop there, neither did my need for the next big story. I earned my NHRA Super Comp Dragster license in the late '80s, then went autocross racing in the '90s and that led to road racing a 300ZX at venues like Willow Springs and Thunder Hill with Los Angeles radio star Joe Benson. But the most fun behind the wheel came when I became a small cog of a winning Rally team, which won the SCCA Manufacturers Championship. If not for a great mentor like Dave Wolin, the team captain, I would have never been able to drive the Tree Line Rally in California, which contributed to the overall win.
